By using software to tie together components from different suppliers, Open Radio Access Networks promise an end to vendor lock-in and its elevated pricing. Open RAN also offers a way out for security-minded policymakers leery of entrusting next-generation networks to Huawei’s stack. But for Open RAN to overthrow incumbents, its advocates have to address such issues as standardization of interfaces, this architecture’s scalability and its energy efficiency.
